Lochside distillery, like many others, started out as a brewery. James Deuchar & Sons Ltd., a Newcastle based brewery owned the building during the 19th Century but they were acquired and eventually bacame part of the Scottish & Newcastle who closed the brewery.
In 1957 the buildings were re-opened as a distillery by Macnab Distilleries Ltd.
Mcnab Distilleries boasted Joseph W. Hobbs, the proprietor of the Ben Nevis Distillery, as a shareholder.
Once converted the distillery followed the Ben Nevis Distillery in producing both malt and grain whisky. The blend 'Sandy Macnab', was created around this time.
Following several takeovers the distillery eventually became part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio and they closed the distillery in 1992. They still retain the brand 'Sandy Macnab'
